Indie Games, where the heart and soul is!

Voice of Indie #XBLIG News Updated! Minecraft Sues FortressCraft? Please read first line.

(To read the updated Post Click Here)

Recently it’s come to my attention that Mojang, the Indie Game company behind the ultra-popular sandbox voxel block-builder title Minecraft, is apparently taking legal action against ProjectorGames, the development studio behind the Xbox Live Indie Game FortressCraft.

According to DJ Keemstar, the PR representative for ProjectorGames, Minecraft is suing FortressCraft.

Everyone who knows about FortressCraft can easily claim it’s a “Minecraft clone”, and has wondered if Mojang would sue ProjectorGames for releasing this title.

Apparently that very thing has just happened. VVGtv will have more details as they arise, and this post is to simply announce that Mojang is confirmed to be suing ProjectorGames by PR rep DJ Keemstar–the exact claim is unsure at this time.

Despite being a so-called “clone”, the game has sold incredibly well and FortressCraft has broken many sales records and remains one of the most top-rated and top downloaded Indie titles on the market today.

Can Minecraft adequately claim that FortressCraft is an infringement of copyright–if that is the alleged charge–when Minecraft is said to be inspired from other titles like Dwarf Fortress, Infiniminer, and Dungeon Keeper?

This decision is up to the courts, and we’ll have more information as it becomes available on this legal battle. Can Projector games adequately defend their position against the Indie titan? Only time can tell.

***UPDATE (4/16/11 at 7:25 AM)***

Recent Tweets by Notch (Markus Persson) at Mojang revealed that they apparently aren’t suing anyone:

Was this a publicity stint from ProjectorGame’s PR representative? Apparently so…and VVGtv will keep gamers updated as new details arise.

Looks like fat ol’ notch is looking for some more money. Greed at its finest.

  2. This has not one thread of reason to it, FortressCraft is in the same GENRE as Minecraft. If people saw Activision sueing EA because Medal of Honor is similar to CoD they would laugh it out of the courthouse, but since Minecraft is at the top of the heap in a very small subgenre, people assume the TRUE indie guy is at fault apparently.

10:1 this is more of Keemstar’s retarded BS.
Seriously, Arcus seems like a really nice guy, but I think his affiliation with such a wanker (DJ Keemstar) is a poor choice.
I hope for Arcus’s sake that this is just Keemstar mouthing off again becuase even though I don’t think Mojang would have a chance in that suit, Notch’s millions of dollars could quickly and easily crush Arcus in court by drawing the case out so long that Arcus would have to settle.
Not to mention that Microsoft has a pretty standard response to XBLIGs getting sued by big time companies; they pull it from the market and don’t pay the royalties through.

Yeah uhh… you probably should like… check with some sort of source that isn’t “that guy who calls people f****ts on xbox live for a living”.

  5. Well, all I can say about this is why didn’t it get mentioned before it was released. It wasn’t like FC was hiding itself from MC. If they had a problem with the game before release they should have spoke up sooner. I hope this is just hype and nothing comes of it. This is the sort of thing the indie scene doesn’t need.

While it is not morally correct, and I’m sure he’d get too much shit for it, Notch can definitely sue.

  7. Source: “DJ Keemstar”

I think that is a good measure of how reliable this rumor is. Both parties have not yet released any real statement (by a reliable source) and both where seeing tweeting happily just a few hours ago.

Notch won’t show up for court. He’ll be on vacation.

So, yeah, Notch just confirmed that this isn’t true.

So, Mojang aren’t aware of it. Makes it kinda unlikely. So, either you were just trying to get traffic, or ProjectorGames’s PR Rep was lying through his teeth. Either way kinda sad on the offending party.

And mojang software has confirmed they aren’t suing. The person claiming to be sued is not a good source to take a “confirmed” from, you know unless they can prove it with something like the court documents

This story seems to be made up.!/notch

Confirmation on there that Mojang isn’t suing anyone.

This is the biggest load of bullshit I’ve ever heard in my life. Notch has said more than once that he doesn’t mind clones of Minecraft, as long as they don’t use art or sound assets from it. I know Notch isn’t in charge of the legal stuff at Mojang, but he probably has some say in the matter.

But that’s all moot anyway as Notch just tweeted that this story isn’t true. Oh well.

    April 16, 2011 at 6:57 am

  21. I love articles like this, becuase there is no source whatsoever, no date to when and where Keemstar would have said it.

Of course Majong is not suing anybody, why would they.

It is such a shame that ppl wont do ANY effort into checking wether or not a story is actualy TRUE before they post it up.

Ironicly, NOW Majong CAN sue them, because this is more a case of slander and spreading lies. (If Keemstar actualy said Majong was suing anyway)

  22. b-l-@nd5

if you actually paid attention to notch’s twitter feed you would know that this is purely rumor, Mojang is currently taking no legal actions on anyone.

Guys seriously, get your facts right..

We’re not currently suing anyone as far as I know. Weird rumors.

Yep, I just asked Carl to make sure. We’re not suing anyone.

This was marked as a rumor, a rumor, not a fact, but DJ KeemStar had some news and we have proof.

      April 16, 2011 at 8:19 am

  24. This is fake.
No1 is suing FC, especially not MC
This guys should be the ones sued for speeding such lies.

    April 16, 2011 at 7:24 am

    • masterblud

Uhm when the source came from the PR then they should sue the PR.

      April 16, 2011 at 8:18 am

  25. Notch just confirmed on twitter that this story is BS.

You might want to update it before you look like idiots.

    April 16, 2011 at 7:31 am

  26. Where/when did Keemster say they were being sued? That’s where I am lost.

Did he tell you via e-mail, phone, skype, text? All I read was “According to DJ Keemstar, the PR representative for ProjectorGames, Minecraft is suing FortressCraft” but it never explained how.

    April 16, 2011 at 9:24 am

  27. Thanks for the reports of the rumor being fake. I was misled by the PR rep, and I of course saw the tweets made by Notch.

This wasn’t a ploy or a tactic devised to earn views on VVGtv’s part. We have proof of Keemstar’s allegations and VVGtv was just reporting information we were told.

Also the developer, DJ Arcas, was gone the whole night of the article being written–mind you this has only been up less than a full day–so I couldn’t get official confirmation.

Please don’t hold VVGtv responsible for allegations that were made by another individual–we report what we hear, and sometimes rumors are false.

I’ve updated the post to further ensure that everyone knows that Mojang is not suing ProjectorGames–I appreciate all of your reports, and rest assured that VVGtv is not directly associated with Keemstar or his opinions and allegations.

Notch should sue these people for slander. Notch is a good guy and wouldn’t needlessly sue someone. The only time he probably would is if someone modded minecraft and sold minecraft with the mod installed (and not the mod by itself).. Seriously though, he is not greedy and shame on some of you for jumping to conclusions about a person you don’t even know.
