Recently it’s come to my attention that Mojang, the Indie Game company behind the ultra-popular sandbox voxel block-builder title Minecraft, is apparently taking legal action against ProjectorGames, the development studio behind the Xbox Live Indie Game FortressCraft.
According to DJ Keemstar, the PR representative for ProjectorGames, Minecraft is suing FortressCraft.
Everyone who knows about FortressCraft can easily claim it’s a “Minecraft clone”, and has wondered if Mojang would sue ProjectorGames for releasing this title.
Apparently that very thing has just happened. VVGtv will have more details as they arise, and this post is to simply announce that Mojang is confirmed to be suing ProjectorGames by PR rep DJ Keemstar–the exact claim is unsure at this time.
Despite being a so-called “clone”, the game has sold incredibly well and FortressCraft has broken many sales records and remains one of the most top-rated and top downloaded Indie titles on the market today.
Can Minecraft adequately claim that FortressCraft is an infringement of copyright–if that is the alleged charge–when Minecraft is said to be inspired from other titles like Dwarf Fortress, Infiniminer, and Dungeon Keeper?
This decision is up to the courts, and we’ll have more information as it becomes available on this legal battle. Can Projector games adequately defend their position against the Indie titan? Only time can tell.
***UPDATE (4/16/11 at 7:25 AM)***
Recent Tweets by Notch (Markus Persson) at Mojang revealed that they apparently aren’t suing anyone:

Was this a publicity stint from ProjectorGame’s PR representative? Apparently so…and VVGtv will keep gamers updated as new details arise.
